We are all flawed

2023

Wood, dirt, and leaves

The foot is a signature in my body of work which represents every first-time experience I have had in my life. My first step on the earth, in the river, and on other continents. We have constantly encountered new things and left trials and failures as we grow; the marks we left on this planet can be visible or intangible and they are the evidence of our existence.

The wooden sculpture on the dirt is something more personal and I deeply connect it to: Identity. I wanted to make something I can hug and to create a piece that can represent the abstractness of a female, myself; using an organism, specifically a vagina, to celebrate the beauty of fertility and be thankful for nature giving us this ability to create the cycle of humans. Everything needs to be rounded and organic because that is how I see nature to be. I sometimes feel females are closer to nature because we plant seeds as we are part of the biological system. I also referenced the look of the seed for the overall shape and put dirt into the slice to connect these ideas.
