然 [rán]
2023. 4. 15
Historic Phillippi Crest Community Club
The term “然”[rán] translates to “nature” and is generally associated with the natural world paired with spontaneity. Nature has the unique ability to powerfully, yet quietly, appeal to our senses in a way that directly influences the human condition, our perception of passing time, and the formation and reliving of core memories. However, because many aspects of the natural world, such as the changing seasons, the cycles of night and day, and the pushing and pulling of tides, are such constant parts of our lives, we tend to take them for granted. We forget that despite these predictable routines, nature never truly repeats itself; no snowflake has the same formation, no two stones are identical, no leaf falls in the same place twice, and no water ripples ever flow in the same pattern again. Our contributing artists act as a voice to remind us of nature’s silent power and to put a spotlight on its momentary characteristics that are so often overlooked.
This exhibition featured fourteen local artists consisting of twenty-one pieces of work and an opening performance divided the exhibition into two parts: daytime (3 - 6 pm) and nighttime (6 - 9 pm).
DAYTIME
Inviting the viewers to experience the cycle of nature by walking into the interior of the exhibition venue to see works that were illuminated by natural lights through the windows and open space. Listening to the sound composed by our artists embedded in their works in the environment surrounded by the natural sound of wind, trees, and creatures.
NIGHTTIME
After the opening performance, the night part started with a series of projection works outside that would take the viewers to reveal the dual side of nature: darkness and light. Walking around the exterior of the venue, you realize the brightness of the works was embraced by darkness to allow us to see, to see how they exist together in nature.
